2004 Hobie Cat Year in Review |
|
|
|
2004 will go down as a
fairly successful year in the Steyn family album as far as our Hobe 16
season was concerned. Stacey Serrer, my wonderful and long-suffering
crew, and I competed in a number of events this year, winning several and
coming close in the rest. Here are our most important results |
Winner - 2004 Cat44 Sailor of
the Year - contested over the entire year
This was a year long
campaign divided into three series. We won the first series,
finished 4th in the second, mainly due to business travel
commitments, and rebounded well to take the third series. With
these results we are happy to announce that Stacey and I are the
2004 Cat44 Sailors of the Year

2nd Place - Cat44 Commodores Cup
- December 5th 2004
The Commodores Cup
is the biggest event in our club and carries the bragging rights
for the entire year. We embarrassed ourselves in 2003, when, as
the hot favorites to win, we flipped twice at the start line, so
this year we were itching to redeem ourselves. The winds were a
mixed bag starting off fresh but then lightening as the race
progressed. Stacey and I got buried at the start and only made it
around the A mark in 6th place. On the long reach to the B mark we
sailed into second place, which we held to the finish behind
Willie and Colleen Stolberg

Winner - Fort Lauderdale
Hospice Regatta - May 2004
This hotly contested
race brings out all the racers for a really fun event benefiting
he local hospice association. Stacey and I got a clean start,
sailed into the lead on the upwind leg and held it to the B mark.
Willie and Colleen briefly overtook us on the long homeward leg,
but we eventually pulled away from them to win by a comfortable
margin. Cat44 also won the Yacht Club Challenge Trophy as the
winning sailing club.

4th Place - Miami Key Largo Race
- April 17, 2004
This is the annual
race from Biscayne bay to Key Largo, sailed in the shallow waters
inside the reef. It should have been our day. It was perfect brad
reaching trapeze type winds suiting the brave and the
heavyweights. It was also our first race so we had no idea of the
course or which side to sail to. Stacey and I had a scorching
start and started blasting away from the field. I was sailing on
the edge haulin' ass as I couldn't see the favorite, mark Jones
anywhere. And sure enough we stuffed the bow one too many times
and struggled to get her up again. We got going in 7th place but
by the finish line we had sailed back into 4th spot.
