Its always great to get away
with your buddies. Several friends and I had planned a 'BWA' (boys week
away) for over a year and we toyed with a bunch of different activities
in a range of exotic locations. And just as before, trying to get
everyone to agree on the destination was just about impossible. As a
result the entire trip almost collapsed before it got off the ground,
but eventually Mike, Rod and I escaped for 10 days of paradise at
Cabarete in the Dominican Republic.
This stunning jewel is an
off-the-charts, most-excellent, unbelievably beautiful beach on the North
coast of the Dominican Republic and is one of the premier windsport
destinations in the world.
Originally made famous for
its amazing windsurfing and surfing, it has recently transformed
into the ultimate kitesurfing destination. We also chose our dates well
to coincide with the 2005 World Kitesurfing Championships.
Mike and I were total
newbies and took kitesurfing lessons for 4 days, progressing
frustratingly slowly. On my last day I managed to make decent go of it
before the wind died. Rod is a consummate kitesurfer shredded the local
waters, making us look all the more hopeless.
After 6 days of peace and
quiet, and much boy-fun, we sent for our slaves, Kim and Sheri. Needed
some good help to cook and clean the great beach front apartment!! IT
was great to have them there although they completely cramped out style!
And lest anyone be in any
doubt - I have already booked the same apartment for the period 17th
June to 1st July 2006. So block of that time slot on your calendars - we
will be back!
